Glutinous Rice Variety
“Tainan Glutinous 12”

A new glutinous of Japonica rice variety “Tainan Glutinous 12” was released by Chiayi Branch Station of the Tainan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station in December, 2005. This variety was selected from the cross between Taikeng glutinous 3 and Taikeng 16 made in the 2nd crop 1996. Its breeding line was named “ Nan glutious yuh 8”, selected out when it was F5, 1st crop 1999.The preliminary, advanced and the regional yield trials, as well as other screen testing of this line were conducted between the 2nd crop 1999 and the 2nd crop 2005. After evaluation by the Committee of Registration for New Rice Vireties of the Council of Agriculture, “Nan glutinous Yuh 8” was finally named as “Tainan Glutinous 12” in December, 2005.This medium to late maturing variety is characterized with the merits of bigger grains, high yielding, moderate resistance to rice blast and planthoppers, lower shattering and could be a good material for various processing foods.
