The Breeding of the New Black Soybean Variety Tainan No.5

Abstract

     Tainan No.5 is a new variety of black soybean, which was released by Tainan DAIS in December, 1999.  This variety was selected from the cross between black soybean local race ¡§Pingtung - Vdow¡¨ and ¡§Chaochou ¡V Vdow¡¨ in 1987.  The generations from F2 to F4 were propoqated by bulk method.  The breeding line named ¡§TC78-21¡¨ was selected in F4 generation in the spring crop of 1988.  The line was evaluated in a series of new lines yield trials an regional yield trial.  There are many good characteristics such as large seed, high protein content, high yield, good quality for soysauce and growth very well in the spring and fall crop in Yun ¡V Chia ¡V Nan area.  Therefore, it was released under the agreement of The New Crop Cultivar Naming, Registration and Inspection Committee Organized by the Council of Agricnlture of the Executive ¡V Yuan, R. O. C.  The main characteristics of Tainan No.5 were as follows.

1. Tainan No.5 is a medium maturing cultivar and required approximately 103 ~ 113 days and 83 ~ 88 days in the spring and the fall crop, respectively.

2. Plant height is about 41 ~ 73 cm with 8.3 ~ 14 nodes along main stem.  It has purple flower and trifoliolate oval leaflets.  The one ¡V hundred ¡V seeds weight is 23 ~ 26 grams.  The color of seed coat is light black and cotyledon was yellow.

3. Average seed yield of Tainan No.5 is 2,552 ~ 3,153 kg/ha in the spring crop and is 2,580 ~ 3,220 kg/ha in the fall crop that outyields than the local black soybean variety.

4. The quality of Tainan No.5 such as flavor and sweetness of sauce are better than imported black soybean.
