Lien, T. J., C. L. Tsai, C. S. Wu, C. I. Yen, S. Y. Hsieh, S. Shanmugasundaram, L. F. Chen and K. T. Lee
Summary
Yun-Chia-Nan area is a major soybean production area in Taiwan, which occupies 83% of the provincial total. Soybean is grown in this region both in spring and summer seasons for adjustment of paddy field utilization, increased soil fertility and farmers income. Consequently, soybean cultivars suitable for grown in this region should be high yielding with early maturity and could be mechanically harvested. The cultivar Tainan 2, a cultivar recently released by Tainan DAIS was developed under this goal. Tainan 2 was developed and released in 1993 nder the cooperation of Tainan DAIS and Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC). The variety was originated from the cross between SRF400 and PI181569 in 1981, the generations from F2 to F6 were advanced with bulk method and the superior line Tainan Yu 1 was selected in the summer crop of 1985. Tainan Yu 1 had been recommended to join in advanced yield trial, regional yield trial and yield stability trial, as well as screening tests for resistance to the key pests and evaluation of agronomic characteristics were conducted between 1987 and 1993. Finally, ¡§Tainan Yu 1¡¨ was registered as ¡§Tainan 2 ¡§ in May, 1993. The variety is characterized with the merits of high yielding, resistance to lodging, determinate type and suitable for machine harvesting. The variety matured 2 to 6 days earlier than Kaohsiung san 10 and resistance to downy mildew, rust and bacterial pustule. Anyway, its performance is adapted to spring crop and summer crop of Yun-Chia-Nan area.
Keywords: soybean, breeding, regional yield trial, adaptation, disease resistance.
