A New Rice Cultivar “Taikeng 1”
S. L. Chuang and C. T. Kuo
An early maturing Japonica cultivar “Taikeng 1” was named and released for commercial cultivation in June 1988. The original line of this variety was Tainan Tsao-Yu 29 which was selected in the 2nd crop of 1982, from the pedigree of a cross make in the 2nd crop of 1978, between F3 (Tainan Asao-shi 158/Tainung 67) and Chianung Yu 252. In order to obtain good agronomic characteristics with the variety, many evaluations were made to evaluate its productivity, adaptability, fertilizer effect, resistance to pest, quality, and the eating panel test. Taikeng 1 possesses the characters of short culm, good yield, medium N-fertilizer response, suitable chattering, low rate of kernel sprouting, resistant to rice stripe virus. The quality of milled rice is good with high embryo residual rate, lower amylose content and good eating taste. The growing duration of this variety was 2 and 4 days earlier than the early maturing check variety Kaoshiung 141 in the 1st and 2nd crop, respectively. It is an early cultivar, suitable for the cultivation in double cropping or inter-cropping fields in Taiwan.
