Studies on the Eating Amount of Rats in Taiwan
Bandicota nemoriraga Hodgson, Rattus norvegicus Erxlelem, Rattus losea Swinhoe, Apodemus agrarius Pallas, and Mus formosanus Kuroda are the main species of rats in Taiwan. In order to investigate the eating amount of a rat per day and to estimate the loss its caused, studies were conducted at Tainan DAIS from March 1987 to January 1988. Brown rice was used as a feeding material. The eating amount of a rat per day was investigated; the value was transferred into New Taiwan dollars. One kilograms of brown rice was set up at 16 dollars in this experiment. The results indicated that the eating amount of a rat per day and its cost were estimated at 40.5 g and 0.65 dollar, respectively, for B. nemoriraga; 31.8 g and 0.51 dollar for R. norvegicus; 13.5 g and 0.22 dollar for R. losea; 6.7 g and 0.11 dollar for A. agrarius; and 3.2 g and 0.05 dollar for M. formosanus. Overall mean of the five species, the eating amount and loss by a rat per day were estimated at 19.1 g of brown rice and 0.31 dollar, respectively. The annual loss caused by a rat was estimated at 113.15 dollars.
