A New Rice Variety----Tainan 7

Tainan 7 is a new Japonica rice variety, named in June 1983, developed by Chiayi Branch Station of Tainan District Agricultural Improvement Station. It was selected from a cross between Nan-Kai-Yu 119 and Nan-Kai-Yu 121 made in the 2nd crop 1973. It possesses good grain quality from its parental varieties, the grains of it are not only bright in appearance, but tasty when cooked also. It has strong culms which support it not easily to lodge and suit for mechanical harvest. It is moderative resistant to Rice Blast and Bacterial Leaf Blight, and moderative response to nitrogen application. It could reduce the loss in Panicle’s germination when ripen stage because of its short dormancy. The plant height of it is 89.2 cm in the 1st crop and 97.0 cm in the 2nd. The panicles per plant of it is 15.2 in the 1st crop and 10.3 in the 2nd. The growth duration is 125 days in the 1st crop and 103 days in the 2nd. In grain yield, it produced 6763 kg/ha in the 1st crop with 2.5% increased over CK. variety Tainan 5, and 4351 kg/ha in the 2nd crop better than Tainan 5 by 3%, to compare with the main cultivative variety nowadays Tainan 67, it showed 3-12% reduction, on the other hand, Tainan 7 is a medium yielding variety. To sum up, Tainan 7 is a variety of good grain quality, strong culm and moderative resistant to disease, could be suited for cultivation both in the 1st and 2nd crop in Taiwan Island, although it isn’t a high grain yielding varieity, but with its good grain quality, perhaps could be popularly cultivated when the system of grain quality’s sorting for buying and selling been carried out.
